Our Water Situation

The provision of reliable and high quality water supplies is an issue that goes to the heart of the economic sustainability and quality of life for any region. For large communities like those in South East Queensland (SEQ), the social and economic consequences of supply failure are too devastating to contemplate.

If Queensland is to continue to grow, SEQ will require significant quantities of additional highly reliable water supplies. In turn, Queensland’s economic future is dependent on maintaining the growth of SEQ.

SEQ is experiencing the compound effects of the worst drought in more than 100 years, a booming population and the prospect of continuing irregular rainfall due to natural climate variability and long-term climate change.

The Queensland Government’s response is a multi-faceted strategy. The $348 million Wyaralong Dam (under construction), and $18.5 million Cedar Grove Weir (completed), and $39.7 million Bromelton Offstream Storage (completed) are important elements in this strategy, along with demand management strategies and other SEQ Water Grid infrastructure projects currently underway.
