South East Queensland dam project attract over 170 dam designers

More than 170 dam designers from as far away as Oman have arrived at the Gold Coast today to discuss specialist design techniques and new technologies associated with dam construction.

The RCC 08 Conference brings together designers from the UK, to USA, Turkey, Oman, Iran, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, Switzerland, South Africa, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil and Korea to discuss roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams.

Keynote speaker Graeme Newton said the Traveston Crossing and Wyaralong Dam projects, both likely to be built using RCC methodology, were an attraction to international specialists attending the conference.

“The specialists will be sharing knowledge of new design techniques and technological developments that can be applied to the construction of these new dams.

“With over 365 RCC dams now in operation around the world, and many more under construction, RCC is becoming the method of choice, particularly in areas that experience high rainfall.

“This methodology provides a higher degree of certainty in safeguarding the site from major stream flows during construction.”

Mr Newton used the opportunity to deliver a message to the international design community that they can deliver much more than an additional water resource.

“Dams provide the opportunity to create sustainable infrastructure and tourism development providing a positive legacy for future generations, which you can’t do with projects like desalination and water recycling.

“Projects such as the Traveston Crossing Dam will include many sustainable initiatives, such as recreational trails and water based sporting activities, as well as downstream flood mitigation, that can not be delivered by fixed infrastructure.”

The Roller Compacted Concrete Conference is being held at the Radisson Resort on the Gold Coast from 9-11 April 2008.

About RCC

RCC is a type of concrete that is much drier than normal concretes, and is used in building concrete dams to allow a quicker curing process. Each RCC section is built in successive horizontal layers (much like a staircase).  After each layer is placed, it is able to support the equipment required to place the next layer.

RCC 2008 is a structured training course aimed at providing a better knowledge of the principles involved with Roller Compacted Concrete. This seminar will increase attendees level of understanding of the intricate design, engineering and construction issues which are inherit in RCC projects.

The structured training seminar will provide access to world renowned RCC specialists and opportunities to network with consultants, contractors, dam owners, designers and equipment providers.
