Approval Process

The proposed Wyaralong Dam was declared a "significant project", and required an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in accordance with the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971.

QWI nominated the project as a 'controlled action' under the Federal Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999, which required a statutory review process by the Commonwealth Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

The purpose of the EIS is to identify environmental effects and propose actions to eliminate or mitigate those that will impact adversely on the natural, social, cultural or economic environment. It should also advise on means to maximise positive environmental impacts.

The EIS was released for public comment on 7 November 2007, and submissions closed on 12 December 2007. The Executive Summary, full EIS, Appendices and Technical Reports are available for download below.

The scope of the technical studies for the EIS was based on the Terms of Reference issued by the Coordinator-General. Electronic or hard copies of the EIS can be ordered by calling 1800 225 384.

A supplementary report was prepared by QWI to respond to submissions received during the EIS public notification period. A copy of that report is available for download below.

On 8 October 2008, the Coordinator-General completed his assessment of the Project. For further information, visit www.dip.qld.gov.au/projects/water/dams/wyaralong-dam-project.html
