Major contractors tour Traveston Crossing and Wyaralong dam sites

29 November 2007 - Representatives from major construction firms are touring the Traveston Crossing and Wyaralong Dam sites this week to gain an understanding of local conditions.

The tours, organised by Queensland Water Infrastructure Pty Ltd, follow an industry briefing in mid November that updated the construction industry on the progress of the projects, particularly regarding the recently released Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) for both projects.

QWI CEO Graeme Newton said the site tours offered contractors the opportunity to gather further information about the projects, and on the ground understanding of the site conditions.

“All the major construction firms have been represented over the last two days including Macmahon, Thiess, Baulderstone, Leighton Contractors and John Holland, with contractors today touring the Traveston Crossing site, following a Wyaralong Dam site tour yesterday.

“It is important that the design team and planners are given an opportunity to tour the site, see the exposed rock and the landscape first hand to assist them in their planning process.

“With the release of the EISs, businesses need to be able to start planning now to take up any potential procurement opportunities.”

The major construction industry tour follows a site tour for local businesses to the Cedar Grove Weir and Bromelton Offstream Storage construction sites on Tuesday.

“Twenty five local business operators attended the site tour to gain first hand knowledge on procurement processes and gain an understanding of opportunities available on major construction sites.

“This was the second major projects site tour held this year, with the first tour in August over subscribed.”

To date, over 580 businesses have registered for opportunities associated with the Traveston Crossing Dam Project with over 80% of them local, and over 270 local businesses for the Wyaralong Dam Project, with 90% of them local.
